Water for the Future. Green for the Future

Water for the Future. Green for the Future

La Fântâna joined a tree-planting initiative in the Copșa Mică area – one of the most heavily polluted human settlements in Romania.

Our philosophy, #WaterForTheFuture, is not just a slogan – it is a commitment we proudly uphold and translate into meaningful actions toward communities, nature, and, not least, what we value most: water. One such action took place at the beginning of April, when we supported a planting initiative organized by the Cu Verdele-n Sus Association.

The location was not chosen at random. There are places in Romania that carry, layer by layer, the burden of a period of intense industrialization with little concern for the environment. Copșa Mică is one of these places – perhaps the most well-known example in the country. That is precisely why even a simple act like planting a tree carries a deeper meaning here than anywhere else.

Copșa Mică, once known as “the most polluted town in Europe,” now looks with optimism toward a future in progress

For decades, Copșa Mică was one of the most polluted towns in Eastern Europe. The factories that once operated here left deep marks on both the soil and the lives of the local community—marks that do not disappear overnight. As a result, any effort to restore the environment here is, more than anywhere else, both a physical and a symbolic act of great importance.

Today, Copșa Mică stands as a symbol of resilience and hope, but also of the ongoing effort required for ecological recovery. It is the kind of place where planting a sapling means more than a gesture of social responsibility—it becomes a statement about the future: a cleaner, clearer one.

8,000 saplings, infinite hope

The initiative we proudly joined involved planting 8,000 saplings: 6,000 acacia trees and 2,000 sour cherry trees. Acacia—fast-growing, resilient, and capable of taking root in depleted soils—is a practical choice for land shaped by a heavy industrial past. The sour cherry trees add something more: a promise of harvest and a return to a natural rhythm of everyday life—a future yield that the people of Copșa Mică will be able to enjoy in the years to come.

Beyond the numbers, these 8,000 saplings represent countless hopes—for the local community and for us, the La Fântâna team. We are all working toward a better future, with clean water at its core—and that future depends on the choices we make today. This is something we both state and demonstrate through everything we do under #WaterForTheFuture.

Why it matters to us—and why it should matter to you

This initiative belongs to the Cu Verdele-n Sus Association, an organization dedicated to reforestation efforts and the revitalization of local communities. We joined this admirable effort as a partner, but also because, for us, any action aimed at building a sustainable future is a natural extension of the philosophy that guides us.

“At La Fântâna, we work with water every day—as a tool, a resource, a service, and above all, a responsibility. Water, trees, and soil are all part of the same cycle. Healthy soil retains water, filters it, and returns it to nature. Degraded soil loses it. That is why, when we talk about #WaterForTheFuture, we are not only talking about what we put in a glass—we are also talking about how we understand that the future of water is built on multiple levels: starting from the soil, extending to communities, and ultimately reaching each individual. In other words, what we choose to do today shapes how we will live tomorrow. I believe—and hope—that more and more of us are not only dreaming of a clean and better future, but actively contributing to building it. Every sapling planted in Copșa Mică is, in a very real way, a step toward #WaterForTheFuture. Just as importantly, we supported a local community in Sibiu County—people who welcomed us with open arms—and we could not miss being part of such an initiative,” said Gabriela Amza, Marketing Director at La Fântâna.

From the Cu Verdele-n Sus Association, the message carries the same sense of action and responsibility:

“Copșa Mică has long carried the burden of a past it did not choose. Every replanting effort is a form of justice, and we are grateful to partners who understand this and choose to stand alongside the community. We are very happy to have La Fântâna with us in this initiative—a company that understands the challenges faced by local communities and actively seeks to support them,” said Mariana Thomits, representative of the Cu Verdele-n Sus Association.
